Who We Are
We live in La Jolla, California, about 30 miles north of the Tijuana River. Because of the ongoing Tijuana River sewage crisis in our city of San Diego, as well as our experiences learning about the agricultural water waste problem through our classes at school, we were inspired to brainstorm a solution that would help farmers minimize their excess water use. We knew that preventing excessive water use on farms would help to prevent agricultural runoff, in turn diminishing pollution in rivers near large agrarian sites and helping to keep areas like ours clean and safe for residents on both sides of the border. Equipped with little more than an old drone we used for photography and introductory-level knowledge about machine learning algorithms, we set out to build a solution that would help the entire industry conserve valuable water resources. What we ended up drafting was HARVEST — a system that uses aerial camera footage and back-end artificial intelligence analysis to help reduce water waste in crop fields.
